08/25/1999: Help!..laptop advice?

I'm buying a laptop to take back to school with me, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them or sage advice to offer. I've got it narrowed down to a Gateway (which my Dad likes) or a Compaq which is on sale but apparently their service sucks. They both only have 32kb of RAM, and I don't know if I need to add some or not. Also, I can't decide whether it's worth it to pay for a DVD player instead of a CDROM ($150!). Any thoughts out there?
