I wish I came by sooner to help you out...
DVD's are a nice toy, and since computing has become so cheap, it is likely that whatever high-end system you choose, you will have the decoding power Technomage mentioned.

Small computer shops are fine, as long as you aren't getting ripped off, which is true. Then again you'd be suprised how much more expensive it is to build it yourself (albiet correctly), then to get a deal from someone who is getting warehouse prices.
Then again the world is round,
