07/13/1998: Poetic License=More Interesting Story

Posted By: Mikurtis

Actually, it might be interesting to see them do a film version based more on history when one considers that there is little... if any... historical evidence that Pocohontas saved John Smith's life. The story that we all know was derived from John Smith's journals---and he was known, from what I've heard, to sometimes stretch the truth. In his writings, there is no indication that he and Pocahontas ever met before---and there is no evidence that they ever met again. Plus, many historians believe that John Smith may have misunderstood what was going on when he thought the Indidans were going to execute him----they believe that this could actually have been a ceremony inducting him as an honorary member of the tribe!!!!

They're coming out w/a new Pocahontas movie---a sequel where she goes to England finding a new true love in John Rolfe I think. In real life, Pocahontas befriended the colonists & when the Indians kidnapped some of their people, she allowed the colonists to hold her for ransom for about a year or two I think it was. During that period of time, she changed her name to Rebecca, converted to Christianity and married farmer John Rolfe. They went to England where she met the King---who nearly ahd Rolfe executed for marrying royalty (Pocahontas was a princess in hie eyes) without royal permission. Pocahontas convinced the King to spare him (this probably helped boost the popularity of the John Smith legend actually). Before she returned to America, she died of small pox and is now buried somewhere over in merry old England!
