Re: "Nausicaa"; I felt that the American dubbed version was NOT "horrid", by any means; what WAS horrid was the original box art for the American video release, which features a pegasus, a robot, a sandworm(!), a Dark Lord, a guy with a lightsabre, and, rather unprominently- featured, what appeared to be a young woman astride something vaguely resembling Nausicaa's cloud-climber! The star of the tale, and all this fantasy/sci-fi garbage that has nothing to do with the story or character, takes precedence over her! Ick! Now, there are changes(Nausicaa becomes "Zandra", her little squirrel-fox, whose name escapes me, um-"Teto", I think, becomes "Foxy", and Princess Kushana, for some stupid reason, is renamed "Queen Selena" even though she's depicted as having less-than-abso- lute-authority in her actions), but the heart of the story comes through, I think. Man's struggle against Nature, Living in Harmony With Nature, the Principled but Practical Princess, the Seasoned Warrior(Lord Yupa rules!), Duty to subjects over personal gratification, Man's struggle against His Fellow Man, Good Vs., well, Not Evil, but Willful Misguidedness, Spirtuallity over Mechanization, Courage and Heart over Deception, Manipulativeness, and Self-Aggrand- izement. I will say that while I'm pretty much otaku, I'm definitely NOT an anime snob or purist; sometimes, changes or edits may be neccesary for wider audience appeal; I don't need 'em, myself, as I have a a fairly broad understanding of anime, manga, and Japanese culture(tho' not encyclopaed- ic), most Americans, as we all know, DON'T; so if in order to get a bigger audience the have to make some changes(at least in the initial release, we can take some comfort in the fact that competently-dubbed-or-subbed versions will eventually be available to all of us; remember, if it weren't for Sandy Frank or Harmony Gold, we probably would not have U.S Manga Corps, Viz Video, or Central Park Media producing competently-dubbed-or-subbed versions for U.S. consumtion. Geez, was I really THAT long-winded(fingered? We may need new terms in this era of the keyboard.)? Sorry 'bout that; I DO go on...
