03/01/00: disappointment

ok, this movie really sucked, that's all there is to it. Drew Barrymore just can't pull off the brainy but successful geek working for the chicao sun-times which undermined any credibility her character might have developed later on. She was painfully (if also cutely) convincing as the relentlessly persecuted nerd in high school, and of course she plays an adorably confused young girl in love here, just like in so many other movies she's been in recently. But the question I had to keep asking myself was, where in the hell is this movie going?? Ok, popular kids might be more than a little susceptible to peer pressure but no one is stupid enough to believe the new girl in the ugly outfit could suddenly become popular enough to snag the cutie and be voted Prom queen. The premise this movie took about teenagers was insulting and stereotypical. Which is not to say I didn't find parts funny or that with a few different actors and some stronger characters this movie might have succeeded. But the entire thing was so preoccupied with drew that it left enough loose ends to trip up the story line and tie the whole thing in knots. I mean, how does her brother get back into high school? Why is it that no one can tell the difference between a 25 year old and a 16 year old? How are we supposed to know that "Guy" is the school hottie just because he looked like Josie's old crush? How does the teacher learn about "the ending" and get there on time . . .there are just too many to list. Over all, the movie was a disappoinment, and certainly did not live up to all the hype it was given.
