Space Mountain was actually in development for 20 years. When the ride premiered, Disney wimped out and slowed it down because it was too scary. When the founder of Six Flags heard this, he figured there would be a real market for some genuine thrill rides. He thus birthed Six Flags. A few years after Six Flags opened, their premier attraction was Judge Roy Scream. These days, it would me more aptly named Judge Roy Gently Clears His Throat. When I dragged two of my coworkers on that one last year, one of them asked me, as we were riding it, "Why are we here?"
