03/06/00: Ian Roberts

I beg to differ, using an example close to home.

Ian Roberts was a Sydney rugby league player. Rugby league is a very macho sport that involves lots of violence and blood and, unlike rugby union, is supported by a largely working class audience.

Ian Roberts was a prop forward, the meanest, hardest postion on the field. They tackle loads, fight hard and need to look like they eat raw steak for breakfast. His career flying high, Ian came out. All of a sudden, beer-swilling league fans who would have advocated gay culls realised they'd been cheering a homosexual man for years. As one club administrator was quoted as saying, "We should sign a few more on." Suddenly being gay wasn't so bad.
