03/15/00: Sorry...

...I am up late tonight and feeling wordy. Either that, or I'm trying to keep myself awake. I've got an exam tomorrow.

Anyway, I was just thinking...

After all your comments about women, I realized that there are only about three (count 'em, 3) female English majors at my university. The rest are all male. An English major is, sooner or later, bound to study feminist literary theory. It just comes up, cause there's so much of it and it has been so influential. It's funny, all the guys churn out their little feminist theory critiques, condemning the "patriarchy", like good little boys. After class one day, I just told my professor, "Look, I'm just so sick of feminist theory I could puke. I never want to write another feminist crtique again. Hell, I'll write a treatise advocating the return of women to the home and submission 'cause at least it would be a DIFFERENT idea. Look, I'm a woman. I don't feel oppressed. I don't feel anyone holding me back. My rights are the same as anyone else's. And I've always believed that I had the ability to accomplish whatever I wanted to." She was like, "Nicole, I know exactly how you feel."

And the boys continue to churn out their little feminist theory papers. (I still haven't written another one.) It's sad, because I think the males are AFRAID to say anything (pussies!) contradicting feminist theories, for fear of them looking like sexist agents of the patriarchy or whatever. Sometimes, I think if everyone wasn't so afraid of hurting everyone's goddamn feelings, we might actually get somewhere as a society.

Sorry, I don't know where that little tangent came from. Random thoughts on higher education.
