06/03/03: Re: Cranky, Get Some Perspective!

The cynicism, smirky smugness and negativity of modern culture hangs heavy on filmmaking and causes filmmakers to embrace it in its movie-making conventions, even as filmmakers falsely perceive themselves as outside the mainstream. It is a tribute to any filmmaker to see the subject of the film from the perspective, time and culture of the characters and story taking place, rather than having a bunch of costumed characters run around spouting words and deeds from a 21st century perspective imposed on the past. If the Victorial period reflected energy, enthusiasm, earnestness, politeness and civilized behavior and optimism based on faith in God overlaying one's life, rather than a sole and arid faith in progress alone, then the filmmakers do not perform a disservice by their optimistic themes. If the characters seem strangely unsophisticated and mildly annoying, it reflects a culture shock of the modern perspective, unused to these qualities. While it may be trendy to dismiss this movie for its basic belief in the triumph of inner goodness, such rejection also reveals the extent to which modern culture finds such a concept alien.
