01/15/00: "Q & A" revisited

Posted By: john_willie

This movie basically is "Q & A" again, only without as many ethnic slurs. Both have the same problem: we're asked to believe that the "bad guy" is someone other than the obvious one, i.e. the criminal. The criminal in NFOM is a ruthless drug dealer armed with a machine gun who kills cops without any hesitation, but the movie seems to want us to think that corrupt cops are more of a menace to society than he is. Even corrupt cops do some good things just as part of their jobs, but what good things do these drug dealers ever do? But all Andy Garcia seems to want to do is put cops in jail. It's too bad he's such a one-note actor, not particularly likable. His best role was as the unctuous putz in "Stand and Deliver" who seems bent on proving that all the Hispanic kids are cheaters. NFOM is stolen by James Gandolfini, whose fan I've been since his five-minute cameo in "True Romance" & who is now kicking ass on "The Sopranos," the best thing now on TV.
