Life always seems to be weighing heavily on the characters Andy Garcia plays. It was inevitable that he'd star in a Sidney Lumet movie.
I haven't seen this movie myself, but it looks like one of those "welcome to the world" dramas where the hero figures out what he should have known at the beginning.
