11/03/1998: What jolly luck!

Finding another auto, that is, in St. Petersburg. Are you certain that you don't want me to drive, Mr. Fish? I am a most accomplished driver - I am sure, for example, that I could have routed those revolutionaries gathered round that flaming pile of looted furniture by just aiming for them, rather then swerve around them as you did.

But I am most pleased to make your acquaintance. Mr. Carnehan tells us that you and he are old soldiering chums. Really, a Gurkha? Um, are you not rather - short? What is it, Cecily? Why did you nudge me? I'm sure I am asking a perfectly logical question.

But why are you slowing down? We have to catch up with Mr. Lenin! Oh, you've stopped for this column of soldiers marching by. Hm, rather soprano-ish voices as they sing their regimental tune. Why, look - it is the Woman's Battalion! I have been looking all over St. Petersburg for them! I say, Cecily - wouldn't we look a treat in those uniforms? And perhaps Mr. Carnehan and Mr. Fish would give us the benefit of their soldierly experience.

They could surely use some British polish, couldn't they? Now how does the timing in the British army go, Mr. Carnehan? Henry used to tell me. "One! Two, three," isn't it?
