09/17/06: Coaster

I was thinking exactly that about Kosovo, because Russia is really against what we are doing and it is scary to think how quickly something like that could escelate before you know it. I really don't know the particulars of the situation so I'm not sure if I'm for or against the strikes but I'm leaning against because it just seems like we're getting involved in other countries problems, but I'm not dead set in my opinion. It doesn't seem to me air strikes really solve anything anyway ala the gulf but these are apparantly much stronger so maybe they will work.

I could not disagree more strongly about Missile Defense. Nuclear proliferation means the technology for ICBMs will eventually end up in some nutcase like Saddams hands. It IS going to happen sooner or later. Or what about the threat of accidental launches? One accidental or rogue strike has the potential to kill millions, to say nothing of actual nuclear war with Russia or China erupting out of a hot spot just such as Kosovo. A missile defense system for the U.S. makes perfect sense. I don't see how anyone could oppose it. And don't say it is impossible. The U.S. has the best and brightest minds in the world, if anyone can do it we can. It is technically quite feasible and technology advances all the time. How hard is it to track and shoot down high altitude missiles? Not too insinuate it would be easy but I think it could be done.

Re wasting money: Please, the U.S. government wastes so much money on everything else that is not even a issue. I would rather they spend a small (comparatively) amount on this than many other things. Remember we're talking potentially millions of lives.

Re Patriots: First, if you were a soldier in the gulf, would you rather have an imperfect missile defense system or none. Second, I don't think the relative failure of the patriot has anything to do with a intercontinental ballistic missile defense system. They are quite different (and I would think easier to shoot down) missiles from the low altitude short range missiles the patriot was intended to defend against. Also, so the patriot failed in the gulf, it's not like technology isn't advancing, maybe next time they will do better.
