07/20/00: re: Can Roman Polanski Read?

As far as I can tell, The Ninth Gate is supposed to be based on a book called The Dumas Club, in which a rare book collector starts running into characters from Andre Dumas novels (like the Three Musketeers and the Man in the Iron Mask) all over the world. That is the interesting part of the novel. None of this, except for the main character being intimately involved with rare books, seems to happen in the movie.

Also, I think Polanski just had a bet with someone that he could get Speigner to show her breasts to an American Audience and they wouldn't leave the theatre. He placed them near the end of the movie, so he probably lost the bet.
