How ironic that the "self-involvement" of the 60's degenerated into Welfare Liberalism. Those selfsame "self-involved" people now criticize my generation for our own self-involvement -- even as we completed the work they began when they told us to "Question Authority". In my generation ("X") we no longer Question Authority, because we have reached a conclusion. After careful deliberation, we have decided to "Reject Authority". We have evolved to the level of ideological enlightenment that our parents' generation strived for. They Questioned Authority -- we Answered the Question. Compassion is just another excuse for Compulsion. Violence and coercion are the dirty little secrets of Social Welfare Statism just like any other form of Statism -- it still reeks of condescending claims to moral authority used to justify using force against unwilling participants. Newt Gingrich is not our hero; compulsory school prayer is just more State-sponsored moral authority propaganda. Teach us how to build things, not how to ask for them. Bill Clinton is not our hero; he would have punished us if we refused to join his wife's health care plan. He RETROACTIVELY raised our taxes; he used words like "compassion" to seize moral authority and cast down his judgment that taxes were unfairly low on the "wealthy" (anybody who drives a car or uses a lawnmower) and passed a RETROACTIVE TAX. It is compassionate to force people to obey laws before they are passed!?!? What a crock. My hero is William Wallace from "Braveheart", who said he can not be guilty of treason because he never accepted the King's authority. Generation "X" has done much the same thing. We cannot be guilty of lacking compassion because we never accepted the authority of those who now define it. Moral authority comes from moral leaders. In post-60's America moral leaders are chosen. I choose ME. Get your taxes and your school prayers and your moral authority out of my face, out of my pockets, and out of my life. Robert Reich asked if we are all individuals, disconnected from each other, going about our own lives individually. Exactly. What his generation says with shocked horror mine says with conviction. Questioning Authority is obsolete. Reject Authority!
