06/07/97: Oliver Stone - an inspiring director

Posted By: Matthew

oliver stone is an excellent director and one of the few film makers out there that actually provokes thought and emotional response regarding the subject of america in the later half of this century - which is basically what all of his films subject matter is. i have not seen nixon yet, so i will not comment on it, but every other film he has made always requires multiple viewings because they are so well made.He usuallly evokes his actor's top performances of their careers; Tom Cruise, kevin Kostner, Martin Sean, etc. His filming techniques and ground breaking rapid editing techniques aswell as his use of many different visual mediums scince JFK,( i.e. b&w, colour, film, video, animation...etc.) in his films are very interesting and makes one realize what potential films really have that can still be achieved. The main criticism that people have of stone is that JFK, and Nixon were not completely historicallly accurate - well Stone never billed them as being historically accurate. JFK was meant as a "counter-myth" to the Oswald cover up. Another critism has been that Natural Born Killers was too violent as it is supposedly the inspiration behind several copy-cat murder sprees in the U.S. to that i say that people can't blame their actions on any film and it should be noted that while senator bob Dole was trying to ban NBK for it's violence his republican party is mainly responsible for guns being brought into the states. anyway, rent his films for something powerfully different, even inspiring, as Stone is a very strong director both in the means and methods used to make his films.
