04/11/02: Why am I involving myself here?

As a Libertarian, you should maybe steer clear of using Switzerland as an example. The gun-ownership rights form part of the country's military-conscription system, which is perhaps Europe's toughest. People have the rights to carry guns, but they are also taught by the government about how to use them and store them.

Amnesty International regularly intervenes on behalf of conscientious objectors who are thrown into prison for refusing to join the army, including people whose religious beliefs prohibit them from service in the forces. As a Libertarian, you must feel revolted even more so by the country's actions, which amount to strong-armed government coercion.

And I think we've covered the fact that Vermont is a largely rural, wealthier state that lacks many of the causes of violent crime. This, I believe would be a greater factor in the state's low murder rate than a lack of firearm laws.
