That's the 87th Precinct series (NOT the 77th Precinct series), by Ed McBain, who is really Evan Hunter, who also wrote the novel that was the basis for the movie BLACKBOARD JUNGLE. And Ed McBain never was married to Barbara Bain; she was the longtime spouse of Martin Landau, till they divorced some years back.
