09/19/97: My dear Mr. Bernstein...

Though I found Mr. Cranky's review and your comments very funny, I quite disagree.

Cary Grant is an icon in movie history. Few actors working today can claim that honor and most probably never will. I know he was not a great actor. Great actors can switch from playing a blue-collar white guy one minute to playing a 97-year-old black slave woman the next. But Grant was great at being Cary Grant; he simply played himself in every role, just like Jimmy Stewart. The beauty of these two actors is that they DID play themselves over and over again. The reason they succeeded in doing so is that we liked them. Had we not, they would never have been in any films after their first flop.
