07/01/04: A bedtime story.

There once was a leader who had singular vision that his country and people had a destiny to dominate the world because of their superior ideals. He also behaved like he had mandate eventhough a majority of people in his country opposed his election.

There was another country in this region of the world that had an violent military dictator and oppressed his people. The leader of the first country wanted to invade them, because of the threat their military and idealogy posed. Most of his general's were against that plan for military reasons, but they did their duty and executed his orders. Of course, all of the world was against him except one small country that went along for the ride.

At first, the invasion went well and large gains were made, because the enemy turned out to be largely incompetent and ill-equipted. The conquest was almost in the bag.

Intially, his soldiers were welcomed by the citizens of the second country as liberators until he sent in his military police. In the process of restoring order, they imprisioned, tortured, and murdered all those who might have differing points of view. This of course pissed off the citizens of the second country and pushed them into organizing a guerilla resistance. It also rallied them around their oppressive leader.

The generals of the first country now found themselves with a newly invigorated army in front of them and bands of partisans in their rear chewing up their supply lines with a bad winter coming on. Their troops were in a bad way. They asked to withdraw to safer lines, but their infallable leader told them to "hold fast" and "stay the course." For once, he was right, and they managed to hold on though the winter.

That was his undoing, because he and his chief advisors now believed that they were smarter than any of their most experienced generals. When it happened again, he did the same thing. "Hold fast." "Stay the course." Anyone who opposed this course of action was silenced. This time however, he lost an army and was forced to retreat until his own country was overrun. His ally of course, turned on him and made a seperate peace with his enemies rather following him and his country into ruin.

Of course, that great visionary military genius blessed by the gods was Adolf Hitler. I'm NOT saying Bush IS Hitler, but the parallels are disturbing in that Bush continues stick with policies long after they have obviously failed, and listens to idealogues rather than experts. What he calls "Strong and Steady Leadership," I call inflexible self-delusion.

Against an enemy that is constantly changing, is this the kind of person you want the White House? He's always going to be at least two steps behind and play into their hands, because he continues to try to bend reality to his own vision. If we are going to win this war on terror, we need a realist and not an idealist.
