The first thing that you have to realize is that Judi Dench's character, Barbara ruined other lives besides the one in this story. That's why Mr. Cranky said it was horror. What was frightening was how early she had extablished control. Remember the thing about the ice cream on the nose. Like Hamlet's play- within-a-play, she had all the elements in place. Even her cat dying had a sinister quality. My favorite line was the cuckold husband's. "Writing goes quick, it's the thinking that can take a while." Judi Dench's character works the opposite. By pouring treacle into her notebook, and she spins a yarn in which Sheba becomes entangled.
