Nothing to Lose

Mr. Cranky's rating:
2 bombs

(Director Steve) Oedekerk directed "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls" --asking him for a certain level of complexity would be like asking a bison to crap silver dollars.

The plot of this film hinges on Nick Beam (Tim Robbins) finding his wife (Kelly Preston) at home screwing his boss, Phillip (Michael McKean). Of course, he doesn't really get a good look -- there's just so much circumstantial evidence that Nick spirals into a deep depression, which segues into a crime spree after Nick is carjacked by T. Paul (Martin Lawrence). Together they decide to rob Nick's boss.

If director Steve Oedekerk had established some reason Nick would so easily believe his wife to be unfaithful, Nick's reaction might have seemed more reasonable. However, in typical Hollywood fashion, rather than confront his wife with a straightforward "Why were you screwing my boss?", Nick runs off and does something stupid. This is hardly surprising, given that Oedekerk directed "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls" -- asking him for a certain level of complexity would be like asking a bison to crap silver dollars.

Despite Nick and T. Paul's adversarial relationship, they start to become pals as they plan to get back at Nick's boss. Along the way, Nick discovers that T. Paul has a family, is quite intelligent and is the undeserving victim of a lot of bad luck and white oppression. How PC. I guess if T. Paul were a gang-banger who liked to shoot people in the head we wouldn't have much of a movie, would we? Thank God, Steve Oedekerk is around to show me something I was already well aware of: Black people can be regular people too.

Was it really that bad?
