Are people just starting to notice it in the mainstream? Emo takes its name from the "emotional" type of punkish music played by bands, really from the late-90s on to today. Those of my friends who are "emo" tend to listen to that kind of music, and some, but not all, dress in black and dour clothes. It's somewhat silly but no more so than any other fad.
