Kate put out more than two albums per decade!!!:O)
Man, the way that you discovered her was pretty close to the way that I did-now, my VERY first exposure to Kate was when she was a musical guest on the original SNL (y'know, bac inna day when unknowns or little-knowns like Devo would appear), but I didn't really realize it...
Later, in college, I worked at my campus radio station, and so did my now-best friend. We both played pretty much an eclectic mix of music on our respective shows (although my tendency has always been more towards more emotional and visceral music). She was into her because of many factors, mostly Kate's 4-octave range, her intellectual and offbeat subject matter, and her Romanticism.
I was in the booth listening to what she was playing, and I was going "God, what IS THIS?"-you know, the caterwauling, the running-up-and-down her range, the oddball lyrics...I had the impression that it was studio-altered.
I later watched her sing something in her NIGHT FLIGHT concert where she didn't play all of those vocal tricks, and then shifted into them, and once I realized that she was doing it all herself, I became a convert.
I still have a copy of Homeground...(a Kate 'zine)...
