I used to harbour hostility towards every person I ever met in cyberspace, but years of taking valium and zoloft have changed me. Hey, don't give me that look!
Incarceration without trial is a big issue in Australia right now, as the Northern Territory has begun enacting mandatory sentencing laws that basically say third-time offenders get chucked in prison for a pre-determined amount of time, regardless of whether they're actually guilty of the third crime or what other factors there are. Theoretically, an aborigine could get thrown in prison for a period of a year, just for stealing a loaf of bread, under these laws.
I really feel sorry for that poor kid in Canada. Do they really expect a well-adjusted human being to come out after they've imprisoned him without trial just for writing a story? One of the kind that Stephen King now earns millions of dollars per annum from (read The Bachman Books sometime if you don't see the connection). This is exactly the sort of thing that constantly lowers my faith in mankind.
