The whole point of this film is that the name, Homer, is synonymous with snaggle toothed hillbillies.
Homer is funny, Homer is an ancient name that the parents in 1930s Appalachia gave to their male offspring. I have no idea why they named their boy children Homer, it just happened.
The whole point the Coen Brothers are trying to make is that the Homer who wrote the Illiad was no different than the Homer who performed with Jethro. The original Homer was a hillbilly too. He ran around half naked, barefooted, and probably had green teeth. But that doesn't stop us from enjoying one of the greatest poems ever written.
Good God! Talk about over analysis. Dr. E should just learn to let his professional self go, and get in touch with his more primitive self. But that would only go back to the "T" shaped lectern.
