Hunting supporters began the long fight-back today after the Commons last night voted overwhelmingly in favour of an outright ban.
The Government was braced for a bitter and inconclusive battle in the Lords against a background of mass protest in London and across the country.
An increasing number of ministers, scenting politically costly trouble in the run-up to the election and beyond, were looking for a way out.
Labour MPs, however, were revelling in their success. In a series of free votes last night, the toughest of three options on offer, a total ban with hunting and hare coursing in England and Wales, was approved by 387 to 174, a majority of 213.
That was a cut in the majority in the last vote in November 1997 soon after Labour came to power, which then stood at 260, but was nonetheless massive. The so-called Middle Way compromise proposal to allow hunting to continue under licence and subject to tight new legal controls was rejected by 382 to 182, a majority of 200.[...]
