After World War II, the United States government snuck hundreds of Nazi scientists into the United States, many of whom were wanted for war crimes, in Project Paperclip. Among those recruited were the members of Werner Von Braun's V 2 rocket team. This team included ardent Nazis and war criminals Dr. Herbert Axster, Dr. Arthur Rudolph and Georg Richkey. There is a myth that the Germans absorbed into the Space Program were apolitical men of science who held no alliegence to Hitler or his beliefs. This is, in a word, bullshit. During the war, the V 2 group used slave labor from the Dora concentration camp at their complex in Mittelwerk. Richkey was the supervisor and he had no qualms about working prisoners to death. Useless prisoners, such as small children, were clubbed to death by SS men on Richkey's orders. After the war, Richkey would provide security for Nazi researchers in the U.S. The father of the Saturn 5 rocket, Herr Von Braun, was just another blood-drenched Nazi doctor. The United States used his expertise with little concern for his past crimes. In fact, the U.S. government fought dilligently to protect their new German friends from the accusations of their victims in Europe, many of whom had been the subjects of blood-curdling medical experimentation: the results of which were greedily poured over by the Nazi's new friends in the United States.
