07/29/1999: 10K Monkeys. . .

On the advice of a gullible friend and another website, I rented this film last night. *Sigh* What really killed me was how totally predictable it was. After the first, oh half minute of the film I had correctly identified every single plot point and "dilemna" in the film except for the bit with the forest fire, which was so weird it almost seemed to be from a different movie. And during the credits, did they really need the graphic "All of the Rocket Boys went to college." Well, duh.

I know it's based on a true story, but for the love of God, was it really neccessary to make use of every heartwarming movie cliche in the book? The dying teacher, the abusive stepfather, the popular older brother, the shallow cheerleader and the quiet and supportive girlfriend with NO PERSONALITY AT ALL!!

When Slavic Mine Guy shows little Homer his lucky charm, I was literally counting the minutes until he would die in a tragic fashion allowing Homer to inherit the charm.

Assorted weirdness: There is a scene, early in the movie where the boys are in science class and there is a substitute teacher. WHY! Does Laura Dern charge for her screen time by the minute or something? Yes, she was supposed to be sick, and it set up the startling revelation later on that she had Hotchkinson's still; WHY!
