04/23/98: What I find annoying....

Loki -- is when meat eaters tell us that we need meat to survive (like our being alive isn't proof enough that we don't!). And they start making other accusations about us. If you will look back, before any veggie got on any soap-box, the comment was made that meat is necessary for survival. The retort: no, in fact, it's harmful. And in my experience, that is usually the way these things happen. All I have to do is mention being a veggie, I am treated with hostility and attacked and I defend. No soap-box. Just pure defense.

I thought you knew that being as we have discussed this privately.

The risk for salmonella poisoning is much higher with eggs and chicken products than with anything else. And most of the meat that you buy from your fast food places or your grocery stores were made in unsanitary and over-crowded conditions.

And no, veggies don't have to be careful to ensure proper amount of protein. In fact, by getting 2-3 times as much as you need by eating meat, you are making your kidneys work too hard. Your body can't handle the excess protein and you are more likely to suffer ill health.

Bottom line -- no one needs meat to live. You can't deny that because millions of people (including whole religions and cultures) are and have been vegetarian over the ages. So, drop that argument and just say that you like it. Regardless of the ill consequences, regardless of the suffering it causes. It tastes good. Pure and simple. (BTW, there are many meat alternatives which taste just as good and don't produce the affects of meat.)

NOW I'm on a soap box. And I guess I need to leave this thread because I'll just get all upset and I can't discuss this topic...

But, this post will be in memory of Linda McCartney who knew and understand everything I just said and tried to make a difference...
