04/23/98: Soy gravy?...ick!

As soon as Linda McCartney's death was mentioned, a veg-head/carnivore debate had to follow. No one should be surprised.

Although both sides in this type of argument get too defensive about it -- at the risk if upsetting friends here -- there is little doubt that vegetarians are almost always the ones on the attack. It is nearly guaranteed that the discussion will get past the virtues of "my" side as opposed to "yours" and that the veggies will opt for accusing the omnivores of brutality, destroying the environment, smelling up the neighborhood, contributing to war and crime through red-meat aggression, etc.

Many moons ago, when I worked third shift and Larry King's radio show had him working the same shift, I used to be a regular listener. My first "encounter" with anyone espousing vegetarianism was a guest on Larry's show one night and nearly all those above accusations were made. For two hours of interview and questions, every reference to me as a meat eater used the word carrion. This guy may have been a nut case or he may reflect general veggie feelings, regardless, he set me on edge for every discussion I've had with vegetarians since. I look for some of his traits and usually they come out.

To agree with jen, however, yes, I eat meat because I LIKE it! And until someone comes up with a way to process soybeans into a Porterhouse steak that tastes like a steak, smells like a steak, grills like a steak, cuts like a steak and has a fucking bone in it, I will continue to eat steak.

I'm hungry.
