...so i just got back from the Toronto Film Festival.. Managed to sneak a day off of work and get up there for the final day.. Must say: Awesome experience. If you ever get the chance to attend any form of film festival, DO IT.. The tickets are pricey, but it is SO worth it to get to talk with the actors/directors after the film..
At any rate, the films i saw:
"Hollywood North": A Canadian-made entry starring Matthew Modine, Jennifer Tilly, Alan Bates, Alan Thicke, Deborah Unger and John Neville. The era is 1979. First time Canadian-Producer is attempting to make a movie out of beloved classic romance novel "Lantern Moon. In order to get funding he must hire American-top-draw Bates to star in the picture. Bates winds up being absolutely insane. Hijinks and hilarity ensue..
Movie is actually quite funny, although alot of the humour IS Canadian...Not sure that it's for all tastes..
First-time director Peter O'Brian (who's actually produced movies for 30 years) claims that Matthew Modine is "The most Canadian American actor he's ever met."
"Undead": This australian made Zombie flick will, in a year or two, be mentioned in the same breath as "Evil Dead" and "Dead-Alive".. I guarentee it.. The most enjoyable horror movie since the aforementioned Peter Jackson classic.
Horror fans, if at all possible, GET YOUR HANDS ON A COPY OF THIS FILM. You will NOT be disappointed.. Tonnes of gore.. Some very impressive CGI (considering the two aussies behind the production did all of the effects on their LAPTOPS).. And a character has memorable as Bruce Campell's ASH: Marion, played by Mungo McKay..Picture an Australian Hick pulling off John Woo-style Gunplay and fending off attacking Zombie Fish (yes, ZOMBIE FISH) with his fists..
The guys behind this film (Michael and Peter Spierig) funded it entirely out of their own pockets.. The quality of it all truly must be seen to be believed.. The look and effects were as good as most things out there today..
I say it again: FIND THIS MOVIE AND WATCH IT.
"Danny Deckchair": Another entertaining Australian entry, starring Rhys Ifans and LOTR's MIRANDA OTTO.
Danny is a cement man who seems to be going nowhere. His girlfriend is cheating on him. He's not able to go on vacation. So what does he do? Ties about 100 helium balloons to his lawnchair and floats away.... Only to come down in Miranda Otto's backyard..
Silly, likeable romantic comedy.. Much more american then your standard Aussie flick (cause a transplanted American directed), but it was a definite crowd-pleaser...
My least favourite of the movies i saw, but it's also the most mainstream..
