"Ring": interesting Japanese film, about a bizarre video that, whomever, watches it, immediately gets a call telling them that they will be dead in one week. One week later, they're dead. Becomes a bit too light near the end, but it has a creepy ending. ***. NOTE: Gore Verbinsky ("Mouse Hunt", "The Mexican", "The Time Machine") is filming the US remake of this. Let's hope he doesn't fuck up a good concept.
"Bruiser": George Romero puts out a new movie after 9 years, and it's THIS? It scores a near zero in the horror department, not having enough style to carry it along (this looks like it was filmed by a first-timer with little interest in the movie, not a horror master who's shooting his own script). It works at times as black comedy, but it didn't go far enough. Basically a clone of "A Shock to the System", or the violent version of "Office Space", but without the quality. And the possibilities of the basic concept of the film are not fully explored. **
"Vampyr": at last got to catch Carl Dryer's silent cult classic, on Halloween. Has some interesting scenes, particularly the prolonged dream of being buried alive, but makes little sense. Yeah, I've been able to figure it all out now, aided by an old book on horror flicks, and yes, I'm aware of the limitations of the time, but still...
"Miss Congeniality": not as bad as I expected, but still lite entertainment designed for mothers and 12-year old daughters to watch together. **
"Murdercycle": everything you can think of that can go wrong in a movie, goes wrong here. Everything is awful. Not one redeeming quality, except some unintentional humor. Quite dull. *
"Terror Firmer": was able to watch the first half of this at 3:00 am last night. Lloyd Kaufman has indeed lost what was left of his mind. Very enjoyable in an extremely odd manner.
Stuff playing in theatres right now:
-"The One": cheesy fun. **1/2
-"Heist": good performances and some good lines, but excessive twists. **1/2
-"Shallow Hal": a slightly different Farrelly bros. pic. Time-killing fun. **1/2
-"K-PAX": saccarine, yes, but not to the point of making one sick. Good performance by Kevin Spacey, and mostly enjoyable (if unoriginal) screenplay. **1/2-***.
