It's a pretty stupid idea, but in the frenzy following 9/11, it sounds good to the knuckle-draggers. "boy, they'da sure fixed them ayrabs trying to hi-jack the planes, etc."
It's something the Fatherland security people would rather not face, but when a pilot decides he needs a gun with him, he's saying, loud & clear, anybody can get a weapon thru airport security & threaten the plane & the people in it. He/she's saying they don't think airport security is going to keep them safe. They probably know what they're talking about.
