11/26/97: hb, Verrrry interesting

Wow, I didn't think of LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN as a NY movie... the author is someone I've been privileged to meet, and I have quoted him (although not from that devastating book) in my writing. Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance in one of the most difficult roles ever written for the screen, completely obliterated by memory of the NY'ness of that one.

And I know exactly what you mean about DeNiro and Ray (my friends call him "Alotta!") being so compelling to watch that the city becomes a mere backdrop. TAXI DRIVER seems almost universal to me...

I also like the Tom Wolfe nastiness of New York in the infamous bomb, "Bonfire of the Vanities".

Mambo Kings, a lovely film! Thanks for reminding me. And My Dinner w/Andre, so very NY, without a single location shot. NEW YORK STORIES... I only liked the Woody Allen and the Scorcese ones. Poor Sophia Coppola...

Anyone else see Lumet's "Q & A"? - nasty nasty NY.

I'm not quite ready to switch to fave L.A. movies, but the gentle L.A. STORY remains my favorite "positive" take on Silly City.

See you after the Turkey ritual, I hope...
