Wow, you really have (excuse the expression) a hard-on for the dark side of human relationships as seen on film, man. Again, you "judge" the behaviors of these characters by some sort of "Judao-Christian" standard... but that's cool with me, I just don't have the same reaction.
I too am scratching my head about what possessed Figgis to want to make an old Joe E script. Joe just can't write women for shit, that's all there is to it.
That said, I still plan on seeing ONE NIGHT STAND... and I could care less what kind of reviews it got. GET ON THE BUS got thrashed, too. This is what happens in Hollyweird: the next picture after a masterpiece (Malcolm X for Spike Lee, the overrated DANCES WITH WOLVES for Kevin, and LEAVING LV for Figgis) has no chance of getting a fair shake. The idea behind this is, we set these guys up to fail (critically) because envy is the deadly sin of all movie critics, and we ensure the corruption of their artistic ideals by smothering them with money.
Sue me - I just love watching Snipes and Kinski act, I love NY-LA locations, and I love Mike Figgis' visual sense. He is, as you probably know, a musician and composer who made the quantum leap to directing, and his "lyrical jazz" sensibilities usually overflow into the cinematography.
Like I said, I do not have great expectations for ONS. This way I can't be disappointed.
I have not dropped "The Sequel" from my handle. It's just on hiatus.
