I enjoyed seeing One True Thing, Titanic AND Saving Private Ryan. I will say that Meryl Streep is the ONLY reason to watch One True Thing. It is a shame that there are not more roles for one of the most talented and versatile actresses of our time, yet the one dimensional actresses like Demi Moore and Sandra Bullock are the highest paid actress today and their last couple of films reeked. (Striptease?? Speed 2...Puhleeeze.....)
I guess I'll get flamed for admitting that one of my all time favorite movies is "Terms of Endearment". (And just to dredge up some Oscar trivia, they gave the Best Actress Award to the wrong actress in that movie - Shirley Maclaine. Debra Winger NAILED her performance of a devoted daughter, wife and mother who puts everyone else ahead of herself and deals with her loser husband Flap. You know, there's nothing wrong with a family tearjerker film if the characters are fully developed (which isn't the case in One True Thing or Simon Birch, for that matter). And it's not only these dysfunctional family films that get my tear ducts working, I cried at "Slingblade, Shine, Spitfire Grill, Fried Green Tomatoes, Bridges of Madison County, My Girl, Running on Empty, Forrest Gump, E.T. and Good Will Hunting, to name a few. There's nothing like a good cry at the flicks or a bust your gut laugh (There's Something About Mary most recently comes to mind here...)
On the other hand, I was in a fetal position in the theater, writhing in pure agony during the "critically acclaimed" English Patient (absolutely hated it) The Piano (UGH) and The Crying Game....The critics truly ADORED all 3 of these films. I guess there's no accounting for taste.
- Forever rambling about the movies...
