10/20/1998: Was there infidelity?

Posted By: Nail26

Although it might be wise to assume that the character played by William Hurt was having affairs, it appeared that there was no conclusive evidence of this, and that perhaps all the inuendo to that effect was designed to leave the subject ambiguous. So if there was infidelity, why wasn't it made more explicit?

Perhaps because chick-flick writers believe that "suspicion of affairs" appeals to the young female audience, whereas actual affairs are a turn-off. By suspecting her father of infidelity the daughter can wallow in self-pity and anger to her heart's content and yet keep the thrill of discovery alive.
