10/29/1998: Oh, God, did Atlas shrug.

I've read three books by Ayn Rand -- ANTHEM (which was interesting though I find her ideology troubling), THE FOUNTAINHEAD (which was also interesting though too damn long to sustain continued interest), and ATLAS SHRUGGED. Of the three, that book is the funniest -- unintentionally, as Rand seems not to have had a sense of humor. Think, for just a moment, about the 150+-page section at the book's climax which John Galt supposedly delivers as a continuous radio broadcast. It would have required him to speak, nonstop, with no breaks for sleep or bathroom duty or meals, for at least two weeks. So much for suspension of disbelief. And let's not even go near Ayn Rand's disturbing ideas about sex as a contest of wills between a strong woman and a strong man in which the erotic content is the strong man's overpowering the strong woman's will (can anyone say rape?).
