02/27/98: Cold Warriors

Posted By: Philm Phan

Spies don't seem to carry the same cachet they did before the end of the Cold War. The paranoia and secrecy that bred that peculiar form of glamor have been replaced with the new facelessness of random terrorism, which pretty much nixes the archness that made "The Avengers" so wonderful. We're not to the point yet where we've developed the black comedy that can deal with biological weapons and public-building bombings the way we grimly jested with The Bomb in "Strangelove," so the solitary evil genius is the villain of choice these days.

"The Avengers" won't be a '60s set piece, will it? They'll be playing out their adventures contemporarily, just as Bond James Bond has had to adjust to the new world order. Sean Connery will be the resident megalomaniacal madman, I believe.

Hey, what's this about Connery being passed over for a knoghthood? God's holy trousers, is there no justice in the world?
