02/26/98: It isn't Gillian's fault about the plot

Hi all

If Mr Cranky had done his research properly on this one he would know this film is based on Peter Carey's award winning novel of the same name.

The following is another more conventional review which takes into account Peter Carey's previous novels and films there of, and Gillian's previous films and decides this film could have been better.

I would agree with the reviewer that Bliss was a very dramatic film and has made a permanent and horrible impression on my pschye. The reviewer also said the plot was fairly true to the book, so you can tell immediately that this was not made in Hollywood.

I confess I haven't read any of Peter's books and I haven't seen Oscar and Lucinda. I would like to but at the time a James Bond film seemed more appealing.

Basic plot. Two gamblers, the Aussie bets the Pommie that the Pommie cannot get a glass cathederal (I assume it is full size) to a town in a particularily beautiful and lush green part of the Australian Blue Mountains. Fortunately for the Pommie, this town is quite near the eastern coast. I don't know how things turn out, but it would be a hell of a lot easier to get the cathederal to Bellingen, than to Alice Springs or Halls Creek or Arkaroola.

Personnally, I think a glass cathederal in any state of Australia would be a mistake. Anywhere but Tasmania it would be too hot, and in Tasmania, it is too close to the hole in the Ozone layer...
