I think back on the last 2 years of classic "cel" animated features. Titan AE, Iron Giant, Road to El Dorado, Fantasia 2K, Atlantis, Emperor's New Groove, and now Osmosis Jones. None of these made a pittance compared to either Toy Story 1 or 2, let alone A Bug's Life, Antz or the big magilla, Shrek.
Have animation tastes officially shifted to CGI animation (not counting Chicken Run, even though it looks visually very much like the CGI output)? Even with their flaws, both Iron Giant and Titan AE were very impressive. But they didn't do jack shit at the B.O., yet DVD sales have been excellent for both.
Any thoughts?
