This is a clear case of inferiority. While I think that the Brits have a lot of problems is it really fair to question their contribution to literatue and art.
Britain gives us Othello, Hamlet and MAcbeth and the US, Jordan Lee "Anal Quen of porn". I know which I prefer.
Also,this talk is also very narrowly defined in terms of time and nationality. Laurence OLivier has also played Othello on film to much acclaim. Mel Gibson has recently played Hamlet and there is a Russian version of Richard the third that is quite outstanding.
I sense that there is a jealousy of Kenneth Branagh and a fear of his talents. No-one wants a multi talented foreigner to succeed, better to employ 6 mediocre locals after all.
