I said it LOOKED like a "Sixth Sense" rip-off from the trailers. (Ghosts, eerie atmosphere, main actors besides Nicole are children of substantial quality, etc.) After seeing the movie I wouldn't say anything other than perhaps the ending was inspired by "Sixth Sense," and even that is doubtful considering Amenabar's trademark endings in his non-ghost stories.
But the problem with "The Others" as I've said before is that it was released AFTER "Sixth Sense," therefore the ending couldn't possibly be as stunning or refreshing as the "Sixth Sense's" ending, regardless of Amenabar's inspirations. I think "The Others" is better than "The Sixth Sense" for a number of reasons ("less is more" being one of them), but considering all of the similarities, you can't help but feel you're in familiar territory as you watch "The Others." That's the only thing that really works against it, and that feeling is COMPLETELY justified.
