How many times do they get it wrong?
First off - the entire region still suffers under the 'Deliverance' and 'Easy Rider' stigma where people are under the impression that the South is plagued with homocidal, sodomizing rednecks. If anyone out there buys this as truth, well then I suggest that it is your turn to be on the lookout. According to movie 'fact', the homocidal, sodomizing rednecks have all moved to the coast and run gunshops in Los Angeles where they prey upon unsuspecting lowlifes. Way to go, Zed.
Secondly Southerners are frequently portrayed as colorful, wacky eccentrics, especially the women. Especially middle aged women. (Steel Magnolias, Yaya Sisterhood, Crazy in Alabama, and so forth and so on). Course, oddly enough, many of these eccentrics miraculously lose their accents, but that's another post. lol
Thirdly, Hollywood obsesses over one particular time period and gives the impresssion that the South is still like that, despite the fact that 40+ years have gone by.
Fourthly - Hollywood obsesses over another particular time period and gives the impression that the South is still like that despite the fact that well over a 140 years have come and gone since then.
Fifth - we still get people who are shocked that the roads are paved, people wear shoes, that there are chain stores, modern conveniences, etc.
I won't deny that we do have rednecks, weirdos, idiots, and so on, but it is no worse here than anywhere else.
