Actually, the backlash against the South today could be attributed to the religious nature of the region and how it's messing up the nation with Creationism and all that sorts of nonsense. While most of the people who are backing this may not be from the South (or believe any of it), a lot of the people from the South are buying it hook, line, and sinker. Combine this with a ferocious attachment to Bush and you'll have why the South is hated.
Granted, this hatred is misfocused. If anything, the South is taking the rap for all the rural areas of America. It's not fair and not exact, but that's where the stigma is coming from.
That, and a lot of the South is rundown even more than the Rust Belt. So yeah, a lot of it is nonsense and regional stereotyping, but there you go. The fact that they actively hate outsiders is just the icing on the cake.
And meth labs. But I could go on.
