Only one film has ever swept the three major critic circles' Best Picture award and the Oscar as well: "Schindler's List," which, despite some boring spots and unnecessary melodrama here and there, was probably the movie most deserving of having that distinction (hey, no movie is perfect--although, as you can tell from lambs being burned in its forum, "Braveheart" was close).
In an apparent conspiracy against Spielberg to prevent him from having that distinction TWICE, the National Society of Film Critics voted number 1 this mediocre film that couldn't hold "Pulp Fiction's" jock strap, much less "Saving Private Ryan's," the much more correct choice of the boys in New York and L. A.
I mean, come on! I don't think "Ryan" was the best picture of the year but it literally blows this simple gangster story into bits! If there was going to be an upset, they should have at least chosen "The Truman Show" or "The Thin Red Line" or "Beloved" or "Shakespeare in Love" or "There's Something About Mary" or hell, "The Mask of Zorro" or "Good Burger" over this piece of fluff. At least let us know you're insane instead of only leaving us to suspect it!
What happened to the critics' balls that they showed last year when "LA Confidential" properly swept their Best Picture awards despite the sentimental surge of "Titanic"?
First the House impeaches Clinton despite the objections of the majority of Americans, now the NSFC impeaches Spielberg over the objections of the majority of Americans!
Will the madness ever end?
Still strange enough to have "Your Friends & Neighbors" at the top of my list, The Creep, The Freak & The Loser
