Denzel has played the underdog good guy too many times. This is why his Oscar-winning, scenery-chewing role in Training Day was so well-received, even if the movie itself was very uneven.
Equally uneven is his choice in film project. However, he's a very intense actor, and he (almost) always rises above bad material. Except for the supernatural thriller Fallen, which just plain sucked on all counts.
