Hmmmmm..........What can you say about a movie like this? I guess it comes down to this simple question: Did I laugh. Yes I did. Once. And it was a scene that didn't include Martin or Hawn. It involved John Cleese (Monty Python), Mark McKinney (Kids in the Hall, SNL), and an eye gouge.
When an eye gouge is your highlight, there's something wrong.
Unfotunately, it seems apparent that fish-out-of-water type comedies tend to lean closer towards being cute than hysterical. Out-of-Towners is no exception.
There are times during the film that the dialogue dares to be smarter than the movie will allow it to be, but most of the scenes are fueled more on the situation than the words within it.
On the plus side, Cleese easily steals every scene he's in playing a character that may seem a tad familiar to folks who have ever witnessed the BBC classic Fawlty Towers. Aside from a scene where he wears womans clothes dancing to the music of Donna summer (that might of been funny.............in the 80's) Cleese is thoroughly amusing.
But, alas Martin and Hawn are the big stars of the flick and they do what they can with the material, which is unfortunately nothing too original.
So overall, Cleese gets many smirks, but the rest of the film becomes gratingly tedious towards the end.
