02/09/07: The previews are misleading

They are like seeing previews for a Lord of the Rings movie, and you pay good money expecting some kind of action/fantasy film - but instead you end up with a dull and depressing movie about alcoholic abuse or something.

If I am dropping $6 to $8 dollars expecting to see an Aragorn kick some major Orc ass, I don't want to end up watching Bill the sad postal worker drink his life into the toilet, sucking everyone down with him.

And that's another thing that 'grinds my gears'. Why is it if the subject is some kind of fantasy-related media, be it books, film, comic book, whatever - the media turns into someone's out-of-touch grandmother? Inevitably, if there is an actor, writer, director being profiled and they happen to have a personal interest for some scifi or fantasy related work, the media covering the person explains it all away by stating, 'well, so-in-so developed a love for Superman because in his childhood, his parents had a rough time and got divorced.' (And this is a real example I saw with a recent Nicholas Cage profile.)

Bullshit. If this were really the case with divorce, everyone would be into comic books, and fantasy and science fiction would not be considered a mere sub-genre.
